Yesturday we filed complaint with city water/sewer department about the sewer problems we’ve had here over the last three years. Today man from the city water/sewer department came to inspect and followup on the complaint. (Small town, and we live just across the street!) When he found out slumlady’s name he said, “….oh yes, she is a continuing problem for us with her properties…”
He also said that since the problem is the line that goes from the main to the house, it is the slumlady’s responsibilty to fix. What the will do is once we have the water shutoff, the are placing a service block on this address. Slumlady will have to prove to the city that she has the sewer line repaired before any water service will be allowed at this address again! They are also going to notify the Department of Enviromental Quality to inspect and insure that the sewer line is properly repaired. If it isn’t, slumlady will be fined!
Now once we’re completely out of this dump we’re going to see if the health department is the right folks to call about inspecting the black mold that’s been growing in the ceiling from the leaking roof for the last three years. Is it the common kind or the deadly kind of mold that’s been making us sick, congested, giving us headaches, etc for last three years? We’ll if it’s the health department, or someone else, we’ll find out.

You should call your local Tenant Resource Center. We had the same problem at our last place where the roof was leaking into our apartment, and caving in, for over a year and a half while every time we called up for an ETA to getting it fixed, we were handed “Sometime in the next 6 months” twice. Your slumlord cannot leave these things unfixed. The Tenant Resource Center will probably direct you to a building inspector to call as they did for us here in Wisconsin. You will want to keep all the paper records from all this because more than likely slumlady will try to keep your deposit in retaliation of your actions to get her ass on the repairs. We had to deal with that and I called them up when we got the letter that they had better give us our security deposit back or we are going to court for landlord retaliation, which is illegal. The promptly sent our deposit to us at our new address. But, they tried to say we painted the bathroom door handle green, didn’t pay all the rent nor on time, and then proceeded to give bad references to other landlords when we were trying to find another place to live because they would not let us renew our lease. Okay one, a brass handle in a humid environment tarnishes! Then they tried to charge us for replacing the whole dang door plus a huge amount in labor fees that equaled almost $300! Two, the OWNER spoke to us in person while inspecting our ceiling and told us to take $30 off the rent for the damages we had to live with (which isn’t much but better than nothing). Three, giving bad references because we called them on their shit is illegal. You will win in the end. Slumlords should be put out of business for this sort of crap.
